Regarded as the number one inspirational and motivational classic for individuals who are interested in furthering their lives and achieving their goals, the book draws inspiration from the lives of Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and other millionaires of his generation. Napoleon Hill was America's most beloved motivational author who devoted 25 years and interviewed over 500 affluent men and women of his time. He uncovers the secret to great wealth based on the notion that if we can think to learn like the rich, we can start to behave like them. By understanding and applying the 13 simple steps that constitute his formula, you can discover how the principle of autosuggestion can increase your confidence, magnetism and capabilities; how you can master your mind to receive ideas from the Infinite Intelligence; the method of accurate thinking; how to avoid anything that could impede your success. Kick start your journey of self-discovery today in chapters covering faith, desire, imagination, organised planning, decision, persistence, the power of the master mind, the mystery of sex transmutation, the subconscious mind, the brain and the sixth sense and how to outwit the six ghosts of fear. This now very rare Nico Press of New York and Amsterdam stock has been found lurking in one of Bibliophile's friends' warehouses in Chicago, and we have selected and imported three titles we have not previously listed. 'Guarmani is gifted with an adventurous spirit, high courage, and a thorough knowledge of the Arab tongue. He frequently lives a nomadic life. Inured to fatigue and hardships, thoroughly conversant with local usages, dressed as a badawin and mounted on horse-back he penetrates far into the desert. There he spends long days living in a tent, studying the Arab horse...' The place Guarmani occupies in the story of Arabian exploration is significant. Prior to the year of his visit to Najd in 1864, few early travellers and pilgrims such as Varthema, Badia, and Burton were attracted by forbidden Mecca. Up to the early part of the 19th century the heart of the land was still practically untouched and four and a half centuries had elapsed since the travels of Ibn Battuta. Guarmani, like Palgrave, wisely travelled under an assumed name and in native costume, posing as a Turk, and professed Islam and feigned the Faith to his own end. He passed from Palestine to Taima by none of the usual caravan routes, but steered a direct course across the barren waste between the Pilgrim route to Mecca and the time-worn caravan track to Jouf. Of this stage of 350 miles he gives us a very detailed account. The second stage to Khaibar and Qasim is more difficult to follow since he only gives us a narrative of events rather than the itinerary and is entangled in the feuds and intrigues of rival tribes, his life in danger, and consequently his geographical notes became negligible. He was after horse-flesh, and in pursuit of the most likely places to find it, and ventured into a good 10,000 square miles of unexplored territory created by impassable lava fields. After three days he found stallions, although not good enough for his market, retreated again to the Alaida to find their tents removed and rode direct for Khaibar 11 hours away and through feverish swamps, and the seven valleys of the Harra with their strange black inhabitants. On the way to Qasim he became embroiled in tribal warfare between Wahhabi and Ataiba factions but was refused an audience when he attempted to visit the Amir Abdulla Ibn Saud. But he was sent under escort to Anaiza, the largest town in Najd, where the principal trade was in horses. His best work was to give us a fairly accurate map of the Jabal, with the positions of 22 outlying settlements. First published in the UK in 1928 by the Argonaut Press of Southampton Row London, this is a faithful facsimile reprint of 1970 by Nico Israel of Amsterdam in the Da Capo Press series. There are three points in the Eastern travels of the great Italian wanderer Ludovico di Varthema that give them an unusual interest. He was on his way within four years of the opening of the sea-route to India by Vasco da Gama. Secondly he travelled through the Arabian Desert to Mecca and thence all over Yemen and Hadramaut, passing on to Hormuz and Persia as far as Shiraz, and afterwards all around the Indian coasts as far as Pulicat near Madras on the eastern part of it including Ceylon on his journeys. He crossed the Bay of Bengal to Bengal itself and Pegu, along the western coast of the Malay Peninsula to Mergui and Malacca and the Malay Archipelago visiting Sumatra, Java, Banda, Moluccas and 'Bornei'. Considering the era, it was an exceptionally hazardous and wonderful achievement. Within 50 years of its accomplishment strong doubts were cast over the credibility of Varthema's accounts and for these reasons Sir Richard Temple has examined his statements in detail and has come to the conclusion that he has been maligned. Like many travellers of this state, Varthema acquired a working knowledge of colloquial Arabic and spent a year and a half on the West Coast of India in the neighbourhood of Calicut and Cochin as a factor of the Portuguese Viceroy. Varthema's division of his work into books and chapters concerns Alexandria, Cairo, Aman and Menin, Damascus, with chapters concerning a mountain inhabited by Jews, where Mahomet and his companions were buried, his temple and sepulchre, why the Moors go to Mecca, merchandise and sacrifices, unicorns, and why the Red Sea is not navigable. His works concern the people called Baduin, the city of Aden, the partiality of the women of Arabia Felix for white men, the liberality of the Queen, the castle Dante, the strength and cruelty of the King's son and included descriptions of apes and animals like lions, and touching on some places in Ethiopia. Concerning India, we see the great cities, religions, Brahmins and priests, the mode of worship of the pagans, the most fruitful trees in the world, bankers and money changers, how the wife is burnt alive after the death of her husband, domestic and wild animals, nutmegs, cloves and mace, and the island of Giava where old people are sold by their children or their relations and afterwards are eaten. The final chapters cover how Varthema made himself a physician in Calicut, the various islands of Ethiopia and Mozambique and round the Cape of Good Hope. 121 large pages, archive photographs and maps.

Author: GNTER SCHILDER & JAMES WELU

Format: Paperback

ISBN: 9789060721209

First edition 1980 by Nico Israel of Amsterdam in an edition limited to 600 copies. The large world maps published in the first decade of the 17th century in Amsterdam reflected the rapid progress in the art of printing. A new map of the world on several sheets came out almost every year and publishers retained and increased competition among Amsterdam cartographers by making bigger and more decorative maps. The forerunners of van den Keere's map, which has now been produced in full size facsimile here, show the names of four renowned cartographers who competed with each other - Willem Jansz (Blaeu), Petrus Plancius, Jodocus Hondius and Peter van den Keere. The earliest single cartographic works published by Jansz (1571-1638) include wall maps of the world, each drawn on a different projection. Our book introduces us to the life and work of Peter van den Keere, his cartographic work, the map of the world in 12 sheets, a history of the map, description, layout and decorative contents, the geographical contents, the second edition and a later edition by Jan Houwens. The first appendix gives a list of single sheet maps engraved and published by van den Keere until 1623, and the second the cartographic part of his inventory drawn up to 16th June 1623. The last appendix shows the main legends on the world map. Approximately 48 outsize pages measuring 17" x 21". Collector's item. He should be glamorous and successful, not a friendless loser. But Stan persisted and Martin Goodman let him give the unlikely hero a try-out in Amazing Fantasy, which was already slated for cancellation. With Spider-Man on the cover, No. 15 shot to the top of Marvel's best-seller list for the year, and the rest is history. Amazing Spider-Man, which debuted seven months later, broke the comics mould. Peter Parker lived in uncool Queens, was always broke, continually worried about his Aunt May, was unlucky in love, and was constantly getting yelled at by his boss, Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. Spider-Man had the quips and confidence that Parker lacked, but learning to use his powers wasn't always easy. He often seemed on the verge of defeat against the rogue's gallery of classic foes that debuted in the first couple of years: Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Lizard, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and the Green Goblin. Much of the credit for Spider-Man's greatness goes to co-creator and artist Steve Ditko, who had a knack for portraying teenagers and their problems. His artwork infused Spider-Man with a loose-limbed energy, and, while maybe everyone was scared of spiders, Ditko made swinging through New York seem like the coolest adventure ever. First available as an XXL-sized collector's dream, close in size to the original artworks, this compact edition features the first 21 stories of the world's favourite web slinger from 1962-1964. Rather than recolour the original artwork (as has been done in previous decades' reprints of classic comics), Taschen has attempted to create an ideal representation of these books as they were produced at the time of publication. The most pristine pedigreed comics have been cracked open and photographed for reproduction in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company and digitally remastered using modern retouching techniques. With original art, rare photographs, and other gems, this robust collection of wall-crawling wonder will make anyone's spider-sense tingle with anticipation. 21.4 x 30.2cm, 710 pages. Willoughby was called in to photograph the new starlet one morning shortly after she arrived in Hollywood in 1953. It was a humdrum commission for the portraitist often credited with having perfected the photojournalistic movie still, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. "She took my hand like... well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men's hearts," he recalled. As Hepburn's career soared following her Oscar-winning US debut in Roman Holiday, Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life and times in Paris, on location for Green Mansions and best of all bonding with the tiny fawn Ip (Pippin) which lived in her home for nearly three months and even went to the supermarket with her and more. His historic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the many facets of Hepburn's beauty and elegance, as she progresses from her debut to her career high of My Fair Lady in 1963. Willoughby's studies, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors, and returning to her private life, comprise one of photography's great platonic love affairs. 14 x 20cm, 192 pages. In 1954 Tom of Finland abandoned brown leather in his artwork to create his own wild ones: with rippling greased muscles, hyper-masculine, black leather-clad rebels with powerful engines between their legs and just as often a young man there too. "Horny models wanted for Tom's drawings!" screamed the poster. The look was adopted by the Satyrs Motorcycle Club, the first gay outlaw club, that same year, making Tom's fantasy world reality. Of course, being Tom, he soon customized his new gay icons, adding leather jodhpurs, knee high boots and leather caps, and every motorcycle bore the brand name "Tom" on the gas tank. Tom's bikers first appeared as two "Motorcycle Boys" in Physique Pictorial, Winter 1958. Another made the cover of the April 1960 issue. Bikers dominated his PP content from then on, as a nod to its American readership as much as his growing obsession. When he sought an ongoing character, a personal avatar, in 1968, he created Kake as the ultimate biker leatherman, and elaborated on his riding adventures - of every kind - through 26-panel stories. Tom adopted Kake's gear as his own, presenting in black leather jacket, white t-shirt, jeans, and high boots to the end of his life. See the effects of the Sexual Revolution in Germany, England, France, North and South America, Japan, Hong Kong, and Italy. Pubic hair appeared on the American newsstand in 1970 compliments of Penthouse magazine. England, always lagging, finally got the knickers off, but kept its censorship laws. Japan, long suppressed, found release in bondage magazines like New Roman Porno and SM Select. Within a year it was everywhere, and in 1975 Midwest redneck Larry Flynt parted the hair and made the pink beyond the centrepiece of Hustler. Read profiles of Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Screw's Al Goldstein, and of lesser known, but no less fascinating characters like Peter Wolff, hippie genius of the True Sex genre, and gun-toting Myron Fass, last of the pulp-pushers. See the evolutionary end-stage of sex humour magazines, the overflowing abundance of big breast titles, the emergence of swinging as lifestyle and publishing niche, the curious phenomenon of reader-written erotica, more funny, amazing and confounding ads from the magazines' back pages and cap it all with the 70s' top five covergirls (and one coverboy). 460 full colour pages of over 600 colour covers and magazine interiors and 18 chapters of information-rich text in English, French and German.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1098/5170/5683/files/view_archive_4c236969-14ec-4c47-b86e-8a733f0591c9.jpg?v=1790346617
ultimate-collector-watches-two-volumes-slipcased
ULTIMATE COLLECTOR WATCHES: Two Volumes Slipcased

Author: CHARLOTTE AND PETER FIELL

Format: Hardback

ISBN: 9783836590051

Author: ROY THOMAS

Format: Hardback

ISBN: 9783836587587

The mostly true tale of Stan Lee, the one and only Godfather of Comics. From his childhood in Depression-era New York, to transforming Marvel into the number one comics publisher in the world, to his 21st-century reinvention as Chief Creative Officer of global entertainment company POW! Entertainment, Stan "the Man" Lee stands the test of time as the most legendary name in comicbook history. Stanley Lieber began working at Timely Comics in 1940 at the age of 17 and found himself at the helm of the bullpen as its top editor just two years later. But it wasn't until 1961 that he ignited a revolution known as the "Marvel Age of Comics." With a legendary stable of art partners including Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, and Jim Steranko, Lee unleashed a dizzying cascade of seminal comicbook creations - the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers to name a few. After moving to Hollywood in 1980, he did it again, developing TV and film projects that laid the groundwork for the "Marvel movie." Stan's constant cameo presence in these billion-dollar worldwide events was a testament to his influence. As the man behind POW! Entertainment, he became a master of all media - working with rock stars and professional sports leagues, movie mavens and reality TV shows - reinforcing his creative stature the world over. First published as a signed Collector's Edition and sold out within a week, the book was written and edited with Lee himself. His tale is told by his successor at Marvel, renowned comics writer, editor, and historian Roy Thomas, who brings "you are there" insights and wide-eyed clarity to key moments of Lee's journey to pop culture immortality. Featuring hundreds of treasures of comicbook art, intimate photographs sourced straight from his family archives, a foreword written by Lee himself, a novel-length essay and new epilogue by Thomas, and an appendix with complete reprints of Stan's comics from throughout the decades, this is a titanic tribute worthy of the Man. Films that made it from 1971 onwards include Straw Dogs, Dirty Harry, the French Connection, Get Carter, Cabaret, Westworld, The Exorcist, Papillon, American Graffiti, Young Frankenstein, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver, Three Days of the Condor, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Carrie, The Pink Panther Strikes Again, Rocky, Assault on Precinct 13, Eraserhead, Annie Hall, Dawn of the Dead, Midnight Express, Alien, The Tin Drum, Mad Max, Monty Python's Life of Brian, The Elephant Man, Raging Bull, The Shining and Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back in 1980. As war raged on in Vietnam and the Cold War continued to escalate, Hollywood began to heat up, recovering from its commercial crisis with box-office successes such as Star Wars, Jaws, The Exorcist, and The Godfather. Thanks to directors like Spielberg and Lucas, American cinema gave birth to a new phenomenon, the blockbuster. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, while the Nouvelle Vague died out in France, its influence extended to Germany, where the New German Cinema of Fassbinder, Wenders, and Herzog had its heyday. The sexual revolution made its way to the silver screen (cautiously in the U.S., more freely in Europe) most notably in Bertolucci's steamy, scandalous Last Tango in Paris. Amid all this came a wave of nostalgic films like The Sting, The Last Picture Show, and Vietnam pictures such as Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, the rise of the antihero (Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman), and the prestigious short-lived genre, blaxploitation. Positioned precariously between the uptight '50s and the freewheeling '70s, the 1960s marked a transitional decade in the film industry. As art, mass market, and pop culture merged and collided in true pop art style, cinema swirled with psychedelic energy. This glamorous new publication gathers the best films of the era, exploring the making and the mastery of such cinematic star turns as The Leopard, The Birds, Belle de Jour, A Fistful of Dollars, and Doctor Zhivago. With audiences ever more glued to their TV sets and the loosened rules about what was "permissible" in cinema with the abolition of the Production Code, filmmakers embraced the freedom to explore the possibilities of film as an art form. As was often the case, the Europeans led the way, the French with Nouvelle Vague directors like Godard and Truffaut, and the Italians with such innovative films as Fellini's 8 1/2 and Antonioni's Eclipse. By the mid-'60s the United States also began to exercise greater creative liberties, especially in films from young underground directors such as Russ Meyer, John Frankenheimer, and Sam Peckinpah. Meanwhile, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music ushered out the grandiose Hollywood musical era with a bang while the Spaghetti Western became an instant phenomenon, and Kubrick set new standards for sci-fi with 2001: A Space Odyssey. From Jane Fonda's Barbarella to Holly Golightly of Breakfast at Tiffany's to Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde, it was the 1960s that saw women on-screen graduate from decorative accessories to complex, kick-ass personas. 17 x 24cm, 780 pages. The first film-by-film photography book on film noir and neo-noir, this essential collection begins with the early genre influencers of German and French silent film, journeys. Double Indemnity for many is the quintessential film noir. Protagonist Walter Ness says 'Yes, I killed him. I killed him for money and for a woman.' Cinematographer John F. Seitz also shot Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard and other film noirs. His is the first striking mono image leading the chapter entitled 'The Perfect Crime'. The author James M. Cain said, 'I make no conscious effort to be tough, or hard-boiled, or grim, or any of the things I am usually called. I merely try to write as the character would write...from the fields, the streets, the bars, the offices and even the gutters of his country.' Under the same chapter is a superbly detailed analysis of Human Desire, The Lady From Shanghai and The Postman Always Rings Twice. Other chapter headings include The Fatalistic Nightmare, The Caper Film, Docu-Noir, Love on the Run, Male Violence including the films A Double Life, Murder by Contract and The Blue Dahlia, Women in Film Noir, The Private Eye including The Maltese Falcon and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and finally, The Darkness and Corruption including The Big Heat, The Prowler, The Third Man and Touch of Evil. Produced to the usual high Taschen standards, the book contains around 1000 b/w and sepia images, depicting most variations on the sexual theme. Very explicit content for adults only. Sportive gentlemen, lascivious ladies, since the earliest days of photography, people have been getting up to all manner of rannygazoo in front of the lens. Rotenberg now owns a 95,000 strong collection of archive pornography dating from between 1860 and 1960. Flick through these pages and witness the fitness of our forebears as they romp, cavort, and frolic with unabashed energy and glee. From early monochromes of daringly dropped drawers and seductively waxed handlebar moustaches, to Kodachromes of cheery, twin-peaked pin-up beauties in the 1950s, this fine collection spans the sublimely sensual and the ridiculous. He instantly fell in love with her innocence and charm and the two were briefly engaged to be married. He soon built up a huge portfolio of stunning photographs of the smiling brunette which helped to launch her model career and, a few years later, a film career that was to make her a legend as Marilyn Monroe. His entire relationship with the star, including many private moments shared only between the two, is detailed in de Dienes's secret typescript memoirs, which were discovered when Monroe fans ravaged his home after his death in 1988. They are reproduced in facsimile, complete with handwritten amendments. From their trip to see Norma Jeane's mother in a mental hospital to Marilyn's visit a few days before her death, de Dienes's emotion-laden archive offers a deeply personal account of Monroe's transformation from a sensitive, ambitious girl into a deeply troubled global star and makes for an unprecedented, personal exploration into the psychology, history, and iconography of one of the world's favourite movie stars. 16 x 22cm, 480 pages. Following Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, we witness the career of Mickey's only rival for the throne as Disney's most popular creation. From his debut in the Silly Symphony short film The Wise Little Hen on June 9, 1934, the authors trace Donald's cartoons, groundbreaking adventures in comics and TV, and theme park appearances. With unprecedented access to Disney's vast historical archives and collections as well as public and private collections, they illuminate Donald's life story with rare concept art, story sketches, background paintings, animation, and comic drawings as well as historical photographs. We encounter the work of all major Donald artists in both film and comics, including a vast tribute to the "Duck Man" himself, master storyteller Carl Barks, alongside unseen early storyboard drawings. Since the 1950s, Duckburg has expanded into a truly global village, with American artists being joined by a new generation of international colleagues. As Carl Barks once said of Donald: "He is everything, he is everybody; he makes the same mistakes that we all make." He may often be unlucky, but this is precisely what has endeared him to readers around the world. 15.5 x 21.7cm, 512 pages. As maid of honour to the Princess of Wales, Elizabeth Chudleigh enjoyed a luxurious life in the inner circle of the Hanoverian court. With her extraordinary style and engaging wit, she both delighted and scandalized the press and public. She would later even inspire William Thackeray when he was writing his classic Vanity Fair, providing the inspiration for the alluring social climber Becky Sharp. Elizabeth's real story is more complex and surprising than anything in fiction. A clandestine, candlelit wedding to the young heir to an earldom, a second marriage to a duke, a lust for diamonds, and an electrifying appearance at a masquerade ball in a gossamer dress - it's no wonder that Elizabeth's eventual trial was a sensation. Charged with bigamy, an accusation she vehemently fought against, Elizabeth refused to submit to public humiliation and retire quietly. "A superb, gripping, decadent, colourful biography that brings an extraordinary woman and a whole world blazingly to life."- Simon Sebag Montefiore. He meets Arnold Comberbache and so begins 17 weeks of an adventure that will change his perception of life forever. In a wonderfully atmospheric country house, Samuel is instructed to search for a lost letter which could be hidden in any of the books in Arnold's magnificent library. Blenheim Palace, Chartwell, and the Cabinet War Rooms - all places synonymous with Winston Churchill. But there was much more to the great statesman than grand houses and government buildings. Peter Clark takes us the length and breadth of the British Isles. We visit the shop where Churchill bought his cigars in London, stop over at impressive country homes in Norfolk and Surrey, and join the crowds at impassioned political altercations in Belfast and Dundee, through the home counties, southwest England and the north of England to Lancashire, Manchester and Yorkshire and to Scotland and Ireland where all could smell his cigars! The book is in the form of gazetteer divided into geographical regions and many locations are private homes or working institutions not open to the public. Each region is introduced with a historic map, bringing Britain as Churchill knew it to life. It notes homes in which he lived, places he studied, the offices he occupied and locations where he delivered significant speeches. The author has tried to examine the relationship Churchill had with each of the four constituencies he represented in the House of Commons between 1900 and 1964 and there are also many less well known locations that tell stories that shed light on his personality or politics. This tour of sites pieces together a fresh, fascinating picture of an extraordinary individual. A younger woman lies with her eyes closed, half-hidden under a drinks cabinet. Her fingers clutch an empty bottle. What happens when a mother withholds her love? When she has no love to withhold? When she sees her three daughters as obstacles to her own formidable career? This is the story of three sisters, Millie, Di and Cleo. They are war babies. Growing up in a world still in turmoil, hungover from war, the sisters struggle to leave behind their mother and build their own lives. Each is lost in her own world where extreme need leads to extreme behaviour. Then a tragic event forces Cleo, the youngest and wildest, to become the catalyst to smash the pattern. Who will adapt and survive in this new world and who will find peace? From London to New York and to Vietnam, the focus shifts from one sister to the next, their flaws and virtues. With elements of a psychological thriller, bestselling author Rachel Billington observes her characters with clinical detachment, wit and understanding. There is hope at the heart of this story and the reader is left wondering long after the final twist is revealed. Millie has turned to marriage, motherhood and God, Di is a foreign correspondent finding a role in war-time Vietnam, and Cleo chooses words and becomes a successful novelist and a sardonic voyeur.
