First published in 1922, it is an engaging meditation on self-fulfilment, spirituality, philosophy and the nature of true wisdom. As Siddhartha embarks on a journey of self-discovery, he must pass through the various experiences of life before arriving at enlightenment and wisdom. A ferryman he encounters on his journey holds the key to this revelation - and the river on which he steers his vessel has the answers to life's biggest questions. By listening intensely to the river, the oneness of all nature becomes manifest, and the mysteries of the universe are unlocked. Siddhartha is the son of a wealthy Brahmin, and is unable to find peace within his own religion and community, so he sets off on his travels through India, first spending time with a group of ascetics called Samanas. For a while he embraces their doctrines and rejects all worldly goods. When he hears about a man called Gotama the Buddha, he leaves the Samanas. However, Buddhist teaching disappoints him, and he realises that self-discovery must come from his own experiences. He takes a lover and becomes a rich merchant, but after some years, dissatisfied with materialism, he takes off again in search of the spiritual peace he longs for. The discovery of Ancient Egypt and the development of Egyptology are momentous events in intellectual and cultural history. This is the story of the people, famous and obscure, who constructed the picture of Ancient Egypt that we have today and made a lost civilisation comprehensible to generations of enchanted readers and viewers thousands of years later. The date of 1881 marks the death of Mariette, the discovery of the Pyramid Texts and of the cache of royal mummies at Deir el-Bahri, a watershed in world history. British interest became prominent with the founding of the Egypt Exploration Fund in 1882, initially with biblical interest in Delta excavations and in Amarna. In 13 chapters Thompson succinctly describes personal stories such as Howard Carter's stand off with authority fuelled by the French, his resignation, how the foundations of Egyptology studies of today were laid, and the major discoveries made, some more by chance than controlled excavations. 388 large pages, maps. Description of Egypt would have been his first book had it been published. Lane's interest moved from ancient to modern Egypt and following the offer of funding from a mysterious benefactor he embarked for Alexandria in 1825, moving straight on to Cairo where he immediately adopted Egyptian dress and within a year spoke fluent Arabic. Immersing himself in the life of Cairo he worshipped at the mosque and lived as an Egyptian, at the same time amassing a huge library of books and manuscripts. Lane made two extended voyages up the Nile as far as Nubia and the Second Cataract. In spite of his prodigious learning he made a number of archaeological misjudgements, particularly in interpreting Akhenaten and Hatshepsut, but his descriptions of the condition of the monuments provide valuable evidence for historians and conservationists. His accounts of towns, markets and the urban and rural landscape are accompanied by detailed drawings which prioritise accuracy. On his return to the UK, Lane's massive book went through three major drafts. With the final draft including a comprehensive history of Muhammad Ali, which he took largely from secondary sources including the Cairo-based Islamic scholar al-Jabarti, Lane submitted his manuscript to John Murray in 1831. Murray was preoccupied with the Reform Bill, and successive revisions and Egyptian visits failed to produce a viable manuscript. Alessandro Ricci (1792-1834) was an Italian physician and a talented artist and draughtsman with a strong interest in archaeology and antiquities who became the family doctor of the British Consul Henry Salt. He travelled extensively throughout Egypt and Sudan and worked as an epigraphist for Giovanni B. Belzoni in the tomb of Seti I and later entered into the service of British explorer William John Bankes, on whose behalf he visited and documented Siwa in 1820, Sinai in the same year, and Nubia from 1818-19 and once again in 1821-22. Ricci also became the physician to Ibrahim Pasha, and achieved fame for daringly saving his life during the military campaign that led to Egypt's conquest of Sudan in 1821-22. Upon his return to Italy, Ricci wrote a long account of all his journeys, and reworked a series of 90 colour plates into striking form, yet failed to publish either. In 2009, Daniele Salvoldi identified a complete typewritten copy of Ricci's Travels in the National Archives of Egypt in Cairo. Drawings intended to accompany the text as plates were tracked down in different locations in Italy and the UK, and here is the result, a fine English-translated critical edition with introductory chapters, Ricci's travel account, descriptions of ancient ruins and social customs, botanical and geological remarks, and historical and ethnographical observations. There are plans of temples such as Kanays, a huge double page image of a transportation of a colossus from a tomb in Deir al Barsha, wooden coffin lids with stretched figure of Nut, a list of offerings from Luxor, the garden of a temple of Amun, columns and reliefs of Ramesses II, even graffiti and inscriptions. Fabulously well illustrated, the colour plates are organised by travels in Nubia, the Temple of Jupiter-Amun, Mount Sinai and Sennar. 90 plates, 10 maps, a large 20.8 x 29cm heavyweight beautifully designed publication by the American University in Cairo Press.

<br>Click YouTube icon to see this book come to life on video. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qav8mB4GNVY" target="_blank"><img src="/WebRoot/Store/Shops/Bibliophile/MediaGallery/youtube.jpg" style="border: 0px" /></a>

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1098/5170/5683/files/view_archive_429a922f-30c0-4622-8575-3f7c815123e7.jpg?v=1790346674
letters-from-an-englishwoman-in-egypt-1842-44
LETTERS FROM AN ENGLISHWOMAN IN EGYPT 1842-44

Save 67% compared with the recorded RRP.

Author: SOPHIA POOLE

Format: Paperback

ISBN: 9789774167621

Save 67% compared with the recorded RRP.

Author: DEBORAH MANLEY, S. For the Arab traveller Ebn Haukal in the 10th century, Egypt was mysterious territory, and the source of the crocodile-infested Nile was a great unknown. Ten centuries later, a visitor in 1910 describes the men who work the shadufs that supply water as having "muscles that work like metal bands". Most of the descriptions in this fascinating pocket-sized book come from the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1873 Amelia Edwards travelled up the Nile on a Dahabiya, which she describes as being like an "Oxford University barge". The women have their own cabin deck and there is a general sitting room with space for the men's guns and women's hats. Making a similar journey, Florence Nightingale describes the effect of a sandstorm with visibility at nil and danger of collision. Prince Puckler-Muskau is impressed by the Temple at Luxor and in 1930 Princess Marta Bibescu remembers the perfume of mimosa as she is entertained to a lavish dinner on a high terrace, to the accompaniment of music from a phonograph. In the early 19th century tourism began to dominate Cairo's economy and this fascinating pocket anthology covers the past 200 years which saw a huge surge in travel writing. The Citadel is one of the glories of the country, celebrated as much as the Pyramids which stand on the opposite bank. Harriet Martineau in the mid 19th century wrote that "in the evening the beauty is beyond description", and as a social reformer she is impressed that the mosques are home to the "houseless poor". Florence Nightingale comments that the view from the Mosque built by the ruler Muhammad Ali is the finest in the world, but almost a century later Baedeker's Guide remarks that the city looks yellowish grey from there, possibly enveloped in a haze. The bazaars and streets of the city are irregular and Murray's 1897 handbook encourages the visitor to regard this in a romantic light, while Lady Lucie Duff Gordon invokes the Arabian Nights. In 1834 Alexander Kinglake visited the slave market, although the trade was in the process of being outlawed. The Pyramids are introduced by the ancient writer Herodotus, and they prompt Lord Byron to muse "what are the hopes of man?". Novelist Norma Lorimer writes that on the road to the Pyramids "you will find the most extraordinary mixture of ancient and modern life Designed on cream paper stock and beautifully illustrated with line drawings and archival photographs. 150pp.

Save 75% compared with the recorded RRP.

Author: HAMDY EL-GAZZAR

Format: Paperback

ISBN: 9789774166013

'It was Nashwa who'd put the rope round my neck, at our first encounter. The novel describes the three day sex, drink and drug binge of a 30-something newsreader in the back streets and crumbling apartments of his native Giza, that pullulating mass of humanity that, like an ugly sister, sits opposite Cairo on the River Nile's West Bank. Pursued by an unshakable sense of impending doom that is only partly attributable to the fear of retribution at the hands of a sadistic police officer with whose wife he is conducting a frenzied affair, the narrator observes with fascinating horror his own stumbling progress through a world of menace and wonder. It is a world inhabited by philosophical prostitutes, nightmarish butchers, serene Quran-readers, pious family members, religious con-men, autistic tissue-sellers and others. Milleresque in its treatment of sex, the novel captures the essence of the phantasmagoric world of the Egyptian mega-city, disintegrating under the pressures of its home-grown horrors, while pining for the sublime. This now very rare Nico Press of New York and Amsterdam stock has been found lurking in one of Bibliophile's friends' warehouses in Chicago, and we have selected and imported three titles we have not previously listed. 'Guarmani is gifted with an adventurous spirit, high courage, and a thorough knowledge of the Arab tongue. He frequently lives a nomadic life. Inured to fatigue and hardships, thoroughly conversant with local usages, dressed as a badawin and mounted on horse-back he penetrates far into the desert. There he spends long days living in a tent, studying the Arab horse...' The place Guarmani occupies in the story of Arabian exploration is significant. Prior to the year of his visit to Najd in 1864, few early travellers and pilgrims such as Varthema, Badia, and Burton were attracted by forbidden Mecca. Up to the early part of the 19th century the heart of the land was still practically untouched and four and a half centuries had elapsed since the travels of Ibn Battuta. Guarmani, like Palgrave, wisely travelled under an assumed name and in native costume, posing as a Turk, and professed Islam and feigned the Faith to his own end. He passed from Palestine to Taima by none of the usual caravan routes, but steered a direct course across the barren waste between the Pilgrim route to Mecca and the time-worn caravan track to Jouf. Of this stage of 350 miles he gives us a very detailed account. The second stage to Khaibar and Qasim is more difficult to follow since he only gives us a narrative of events rather than the itinerary and is entangled in the feuds and intrigues of rival tribes, his life in danger, and consequently his geographical notes became negligible. He was after horse-flesh, and in pursuit of the most likely places to find it, and ventured into a good 10,000 square miles of unexplored territory created by impassable lava fields. After three days he found stallions, although not good enough for his market, retreated again to the Alaida to find their tents removed and rode direct for Khaibar 11 hours away and through feverish swamps, and the seven valleys of the Harra with their strange black inhabitants. On the way to Qasim he became embroiled in tribal warfare between Wahhabi and Ataiba factions but was refused an audience when he attempted to visit the Amir Abdulla Ibn Saud. But he was sent under escort to Anaiza, the largest town in Najd, where the principal trade was in horses. His best work was to give us a fairly accurate map of the Jabal, with the positions of 22 outlying settlements. First published in the UK in 1928 by the Argonaut Press of Southampton Row London, this is a faithful facsimile reprint of 1970 by Nico Israel of Amsterdam in the Da Capo Press series. There are three points in the Eastern travels of the great Italian wanderer Ludovico di Varthema that give them an unusual interest. He was on his way within four years of the opening of the sea-route to India by Vasco da Gama. Secondly he travelled through the Arabian Desert to Mecca and thence all over Yemen and Hadramaut, passing on to Hormuz and Persia as far as Shiraz, and afterwards all around the Indian coasts as far as Pulicat near Madras on the eastern part of it including Ceylon on his journeys. He crossed the Bay of Bengal to Bengal itself and Pegu, along the western coast of the Malay Peninsula to Mergui and Malacca and the Malay Archipelago visiting Sumatra, Java, Banda, Moluccas and 'Bornei'. Considering the era, it was an exceptionally hazardous and wonderful achievement. Within 50 years of its accomplishment strong doubts were cast over the credibility of Varthema's accounts and for these reasons Sir Richard Temple has examined his statements in detail and has come to the conclusion that he has been maligned. Like many travellers of this state, Varthema acquired a working knowledge of colloquial Arabic and spent a year and a half on the West Coast of India in the neighbourhood of Calicut and Cochin as a factor of the Portuguese Viceroy. Varthema's division of his work into books and chapters concerns Alexandria, Cairo, Aman and Menin, Damascus, with chapters concerning a mountain inhabited by Jews, where Mahomet and his companions were buried, his temple and sepulchre, why the Moors go to Mecca, merchandise and sacrifices, unicorns, and why the Red Sea is not navigable. His works concern the people called Baduin, the city of Aden, the partiality of the women of Arabia Felix for white men, the liberality of the Queen, the castle Dante, the strength and cruelty of the King's son and included descriptions of apes and animals like lions, and touching on some places in Ethiopia. Concerning India, we see the great cities, religions, Brahmins and priests, the mode of worship of the pagans, the most fruitful trees in the world, bankers and money changers, how the wife is burnt alive after the death of her husband, domestic and wild animals, nutmegs, cloves and mace, and the island of Giava where old people are sold by their children or their relations and afterwards are eaten. The final chapters cover how Varthema made himself a physician in Calicut, the various islands of Ethiopia and Mozambique and round the Cape of Good Hope. 121 large pages, archive photographs and maps.

Author: GNTER SCHILDER & JAMES WELU

Format: Paperback

ISBN: 9789060721209

First edition 1980 by Nico Israel of Amsterdam in an edition limited to 600 copies. The large world maps published in the first decade of the 17th century in Amsterdam reflected the rapid progress in the art of printing. A new map of the world on several sheets came out almost every year and publishers retained and increased competition among Amsterdam cartographers by making bigger and more decorative maps. The forerunners of van den Keere's map, which has now been produced in full size facsimile here, show the names of four renowned cartographers who competed with each other - Willem Jansz (Blaeu), Petrus Plancius, Jodocus Hondius and Peter van den Keere. The earliest single cartographic works published by Jansz (1571-1638) include wall maps of the world, each drawn on a different projection. Our book introduces us to the life and work of Peter van den Keere, his cartographic work, the map of the world in 12 sheets, a history of the map, description, layout and decorative contents, the geographical contents, the second edition and a later edition by Jan Houwens. The first appendix gives a list of single sheet maps engraved and published by van den Keere until 1623, and the second the cartographic part of his inventory drawn up to 16th June 1623. The last appendix shows the main legends on the world map. Approximately 48 outsize pages measuring 17" x 21". Collector's item. Clint Eastwood's narrowed eyes beneath the battered brown hat convey the swashbuckling hero of dozens of westerns, Del Boy is unmistakeable under the check cap, Tommy Cooper has his fez, and we go back to our guinea pig friend for Dame Edna Everage with sparkly flyway specs, purple hair and a dress encrusted with bling. The near-complete illustrated manuscript, created in Augsburg around 1550, is composed of 169 pages of large-format illustrations in gouache and watercolour, depicting wondrous and often eerie phenomena. The mesmerising, luminous images deal with both biblical and folkloric tales, miracles and and apocalyptic visions, depicting stories from the Old Testament and Book of Revelation as well as events that took place in the immediate present of the manuscript's author. From shooting stars to swarms of locusts, terrifying monsters to fatal floods, page after page hypnotises with visions alternately dreadful, spectacular, and even apocalyptic. Many of the illustrations in the opening are based on woodcuts by Hans Holbein the Younger or Hans Sebald Behan. In the case of the Deluge, this is not based directly on the woodcut in the Luther Bible (ill. 28) although parallels can be seen, it concentrates on the pictorial narrative. There is Beham's Moses and the Israelites Crossing the Red Sea, Prophet Elijah being taken up to Heaven in a Chariot and a stunningly beautiful Johah and the Whale in jewel-like reds and blues and greens from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder from the Luther Bible and an almost 3D quality to some of the full page colour plates. This volume presents the revelatory Book of Miracles in a new, compact format, with a translation of the manuscript texts and an essay that gives an introduction to the cultural and historical context of this unique Renaissance work. 15.6 x 21.7cm, 512 pages. Not only does it provide us with insight into the architecture of Classical Antiquity and related principles, it also lays the foundations for all discussions on architectural theory since the Renaissance. Dedicated to Emperor Augustus, it was penned by a military engineer serving in the Roman Army who is known to us as Vitruvius. Although the Vitruvian tradition remained alive in numerous medieval manuscripts, it was only of marginal importance for actual building practice. Architects such as Sebastiano Serlio, Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola and Andrea Palladio systemised Vitruvius' doctrine, and made it available to the public in illustrated books. Structural strength, usefulness, beauty or delight, the Vitruvian architectural aesthetic embraces the doctrine of the column orders, correct use of proportions, and the canons of decorum, according to which certain forms were assigned specific gods such as Doric temples to Mars, Minerva and Hercules and Corinthian temples to Venus and the water nymphs and the Ionic-style temple to Juno, Diana and Bacchus. From around 1750 new methods were gradually developed for the description of architecture. The books covers architecture and literature, Humanism, the Renaissance, culture of the court and culture of the city, books and illustrations in books, architectural theory and the social utopia, theory and anti-theory and is organised by Italy, France, England, Germany and the 20th century. Impressively well illustrated throughout with architectural drawings, engravings and colour photos. From Alberti and Palladio to Le Corbusier and Koolhaas, the best treatises by architecture's greatest masters are gathered here. 17 x 24cm, 680 pages. In fact, nobody could have imagined the extraordinary phenomenon the X-Men would eventually grow into - not Goodman, not Lee, not even the forward-thinking futurist Jack Kirby. What they started out as was a charming, ragtag team of misfits, devised by Lee and Kirby to be mutants, youngsters born with "X-tra" powers thrust upon them not by accidentally crossing paths with cosmic rays or a nuclear blast, but by the fate of birth, led by a no-nonsense professor who trained them to become heroes that could protect the world from menaces, mutant and otherwise. The first years of storytelling laid the foundation for much of what has put the X-Men at the crossroads of comics and popular culture. Hounded by a public that fears and misunderstands them, mutantkind find themselves at the heart of their own civil rights struggle; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman found safety amongst themselves despite the challenges that set them apart from others in society. Professor Xavier lined up against his ideological foe, Magneto, who had assembled a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to take the fight for their self-preservation directly to humankind. Along the way, Lee and Kirby, who were on fire taking comics into the Marvel Age, introduced a menagerie of villains and supporting characters that would become mainstays of Marvel and its lore: the super-powered siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; the formidable Blob; the unstoppable Juggernaut; the jungle dweller from the Savage Land, Ka-Zar; the demigod from the stars, the Stranger; and Bolivar Trask and his army of mutant-hunting Sentinels. And as Lee and Kirby gave way to new talents so they could move on to new corners of the Marvel Universe, Atlas era art veteran Werner Roth teamed with writing newcomer and future X-Men legend Roy Thomas to begin their long run on the title. This edition features the first 21 stories of our favourite oddball superheroes from 1963 to 1966. The most pristine, pedigreed comics have been cracked open and photographed for reproduction in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company. Each page has been photographed as printed more than half a century ago, then digitally remastered using modern retouching techniques to correct problems with the era's inexpensive, imperfect printing, as if hot off of a world-class 1960s printing press. Kirby, who thought superheroes were due for a revival after 15 years of being pushed aside by romance, horror, and war comics, saw it as smart business. Lee just once wanted to "do the type of story I myself would enjoy reading." The Fantastic Four forever changed their careers, their lives, and the comic book industry. Some of the most iconic moments in Marvel history are here, starting with Reed Richards, his girlfriend Sue Storm, his best friend Ben Grimm, and her little brother Johnny Storm crash landing their rocket after it has been hit by cosmic rays and discovering they have been transformed into Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Girl, the Thing, and the Human Torch in issue No. 1. They were emotionally complex characters, who weren't always sure whether their powers were a benefit or burden. Stories were set in New York City, not some fictional stand-in, and Marvel heroes regularly crossed over into each other's books. The art was dynamic and the writing conversational and engaging. Lee and Kirby were like the Lennon and McCartney of comic books. Following the introduction of the Fantastic Four in 1961 came the amazing (Spider-Man), the astonishing (Ant-Man), the strange (Doctor, that is), the incredible (Hulk), the invincible (Iron Man) and the mighty (Thor). Still, Marvel editor in chief Stan Lee realised something was missing. "I was writing these characters and I thought it would fun to put them together in a team," he recalled. So Lee and artist Jack Kirby assembled Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor, and the Hulk to create the Avengers. Right away it was clear this team was different. If the Fantastic Four were family, then the Avengers were the co-workers you didn't choose. Not everyone got along - the Hulk fought with everyone - but working together they could defeat the baddest of Marvel's bad guys, like Loki, Kang the Conqueror, the Masters of Evil, and Immortus. The lineup was ever changing: The Hulk departed, Captain America joined, and Ant-Man grew up to become Giant-Man. Then, remarkably, villains Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch became heroes, and Avengers, and the group's founding members shockingly departed, leaving Captain America to lead the newly-minted heroes. Relive the classic early adventures of Avengers Nos. 1-20 now available as a compact trade edition. He should be glamorous and successful, not a friendless loser. But Stan persisted and Martin Goodman let him give the unlikely hero a try-out in Amazing Fantasy, which was already slated for cancellation. With Spider-Man on the cover, No. 15 shot to the top of Marvel's best-seller list for the year, and the rest is history. Amazing Spider-Man, which debuted seven months later, broke the comics mould. Peter Parker lived in uncool Queens, was always broke, continually worried about his Aunt May, was unlucky in love, and was constantly getting yelled at by his boss, Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. Spider-Man had the quips and confidence that Parker lacked, but learning to use his powers wasn't always easy. He often seemed on the verge of defeat against the rogue's gallery of classic foes that debuted in the first couple of years: Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Lizard, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and the Green Goblin. Much of the credit for Spider-Man's greatness goes to co-creator and artist Steve Ditko, who had a knack for portraying teenagers and their problems. His artwork infused Spider-Man with a loose-limbed energy, and, while maybe everyone was scared of spiders, Ditko made swinging through New York seem like the coolest adventure ever. First available as an XXL-sized collector's dream, close in size to the original artworks, this compact edition features the first 21 stories of the world's favourite web slinger from 1962-1964. Rather than recolour the original artwork (as has been done in previous decades' reprints of classic comics), Taschen has attempted to create an ideal representation of these books as they were produced at the time of publication. The most pristine pedigreed comics have been cracked open and photographed for reproduction in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company and digitally remastered using modern retouching techniques. With original art, rare photographs, and other gems, this robust collection of wall-crawling wonder will make anyone's spider-sense tingle with anticipation. 21.4 x 30.2cm, 710 pages. Willoughby was called in to photograph the new starlet one morning shortly after she arrived in Hollywood in 1953. It was a humdrum commission for the portraitist often credited with having perfected the photojournalistic movie still, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. "She took my hand like... well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men's hearts," he recalled. As Hepburn's career soared following her Oscar-winning US debut in Roman Holiday, Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life and times in Paris, on location for Green Mansions and best of all bonding with the tiny fawn Ip (Pippin) which lived in her home for nearly three months and even went to the supermarket with her and more. His historic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the many facets of Hepburn's beauty and elegance, as she progresses from her debut to her career high of My Fair Lady in 1963. Willoughby's studies, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors, and returning to her private life, comprise one of photography's great platonic love affairs. 14 x 20cm, 192 pages. A string beam of light illuminates just the neck, part of the cheek, the earlobe and the tip of the nose. The other parts of the face are lost in deep shadow giving an impression of depth, mystery and drama. Few devotees of the form can approach Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn's radical contributions to self-portraiture. Challenging the conventions enshrined by his predecessors, Rembrandt transformed the art into a fully realised medium capable of communicating emotional depth rather than favourably immortalising one's likeness in the finest trappings of luxury. With more than 80 works spanning paintings, etchings, and drawings, the Dutchman's lifelong practice of self-portraiture, one constant is particularly striking across media and styles - Rembrandt's dedication to presenting himself from multiple perspectives, celebrating the multiplicity of the individual and championing the unfiltered portrayal of emotional expression. The works themselves are rich with technical innovation and experimentation and each expressive brushstroke and obfuscated feature amounts to an unflinchingly honest characterisation of himself, in all his foibles, contrasting states of feeling, and stages of life. This monograph renders all of Rembrandt's self-portraits - from his first experimentations at age 22 to his final self-portrait painted a year before his death. 14 x 19.5cm, 192 pages. With a career spanning across continents and over six decades, the work of the renowned architect Norman Foster is nothing short of extraordinary. His creative innovation and holistic approach have made him one of the world's most influential and well-known architects. From the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, to the Reichstag in Berlin, the enclosed court of the British Museum in London to the Millau Viaduct in France, with his practice of Foster + Partners, he has created celebrated landmarks that stand out for their inventive modernity and for what he calls "a sustainable approach to the design of the built environment." This is the first time Foster's complete body of work has been published in one edition on such a grand scale. Giving a rare insight into the inner workings of his creative practice, it details his personal approach to his work, his inspirations, the link between art and architecture, and the significance and correlation between his passions, such as being an avid aviator, and his work. The extra-large sized monograph encompasses a lifetime of achievement and originality in two volumes. The first presents his architectural oeuvre and is filled with numerous unpublished images and sketches handpicked by Foster from his archives. Paired with nearly 1000 illustrations, the second book contains eight essays he wrote explaining his sources of inspiration. Hardbacks, two volumes in slipcase, 30.8 x 39 cm, 9.74 kg, 1064 pages. Eleven entranced kittens, a seeming impossible feat, white, grey, black, brindle and ginger are captured on the opening double page spread. On a winter's night in 1949 in New York City, young marketing student and budding photographer Walter Chandoha spotted a stray kitten in the snow, bundled it into his coat, and brought it home. Little did he know he had just met the muse that would determine the course of his life. Chandoha turned his lens on his new feline friend - which he named Loco - and was so inspired by the results that he started photographing kittens from a local shelter. These images marked the start of an extraordinary career that would span seven decades. From advertisements for Puss 'n Boots cat food to greetings cards, jigsaw puzzles to pet-food packaging, his images combined his signature glamorous lighting to rim the head and ears, which made each cat's fur stand out in sharp relief. This technique would define the visual vocabulary of animal portraiture for generations and inspire such masters as Andy Warhol, who took cues from Chandoha's charming portraits in his illustrated cat book. Four adorable Siamese kittens peep from a basket (1957), cats leap from this genre-defining artist's archives, featuring hundreds of close-ups and colour studio and environmental portraits, black and white street photography like the stray cat at Rome's Coliseum 1981, images from vintage cat shows, tender pictures that combine his children with cats, barn cats, family pets, and more against stunning scenery. This remarkable photographer passed away at the age of 98 in 2019. Reuel Golden is the former editor of the British Journal of Photography and the Photography editor at TASCHEN. 14 x 19.5 cm, 192 pages, new reprint, colour and mono photos.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1098/5170/5683/files/view_archive_c997a3b6-5285-467e-aee9-c111c4d8a10f.jpg?v=1790346625
frida-kahlo-45th-edition
FRIDA KAHLO 45th Edition

Author: LUIS-MARTN LOZANO

Format: Hardback

ISBN: 9783836594851

Author: EDITED BY DIAN HANSON

Format: Hardback

ISBN: 9783836594172

In 1953 Marlon Brando donned a black leather Perfecto motorcycle jacket, military cap, denim jeans, and engineer boots to portray Johnny, sneering leader of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, in The Wild One. In 1954 Tom of Finland abandoned brown leather in his artwork to create his own wild ones: with rippling greased muscles, hyper-masculine, black leather-clad rebels with powerful engines between their legs and just as often a young man there too. "Horny models wanted for Tom's drawings!" screamed the poster. The look was adopted by the Satyrs Motorcycle Club, the first gay outlaw club, that same year, making Tom's fantasy world reality. Of course, being Tom, he soon customized his new gay icons, adding leather jodhpurs, knee high boots and leather caps, and every motorcycle bore the brand name "Tom" on the gas tank. Tom's bikers first appeared as two "Motorcycle Boys" in Physique Pictorial, Winter 1958. Another made the cover of the April 1960 issue. Bikers dominated his PP content from then on, as a nod to its American readership as much as his growing obsession. When he sought an ongoing character, a personal avatar, in 1968, he created Kake as the ultimate biker leatherman, and elaborated on his riding adventures - of every kind - through 26-panel stories. Tom adopted Kake's gear as his own, presenting in black leather jacket, white t-shirt, jeans, and high boots to the end of his life.
